If otters were to face off with a crocodile, who will win?
Naturally given the size, strength and scary jaws, you would think it is the latter.
You are absolutely right only if there was just one lone otter confronting a vicious crocodile.
But when there is a family of otters it is a quite different story.
Recently a wildlife observer at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve (Singapore) witnessed a family of six otters banding together to fend off a crocodile that came too close for comfort.
This fascinating scene was captured on video. For a full ten minutes, the family of otters kept circling around the crocodile that snapped at them with no effect.
It seems that even though a small otter is no match to such bigger and deadly predator yet when they band together, they are fearless and formidable even before a ferocious crocodile.
Their strength is not found in any single individual but in the family.
Just so, we should never demean, devalue or underestimate the power of banding together as a family of believers. There is safety in numbers.
When Christians unite together in prayer, support and accountability, they have a better chance of warding off their enemy, the devil who “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (I Peter 5:8).
The forces waging war against us is frightening.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).
It is most interesting to note that the call to put on the full armour of God is not directed to individuals but to the group of brethren or the family of believers.
“Put on the full armour of God, so that you (plural) can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
In other words …
Put on the Belt of Truth together. Create the setting whereby you can help each other to embrace the Word of Truth and live for God truthfully in every way.
Put on the Breastplate of Righteousness together. Remind each other of the imputed righteousness that none may boast save in the cross of Christ.
Put on the Gospel (Shoes) of Peace together. Pray for each other to be ready when the Lord leads to the right people, to the right places, at the right time through the right means of sharing the gospel.
Put on the Shield of Faith. Together by faith raise up that shield when the enemy fires those arrows of doubt, fear, worry, unbelief, defeat, despair, guilt and condemnation.
Put on the Helmet of Salvation collectively. Together guard and protect the mind from unholy imaginations, unwelcome thoughts, negative thinking, anxious mindset, fearful outlook and more.
Wield the Sword of the Spirit (which is the Word of God). Together, use this powerful arsenal as Jesus did to the devil. “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
The enemy is fearsome but we shouldn’t face him alone.
If six otters can ward off a crocodile, imagine what can six Christians do when they band together.
